Jephthah: a surprising member of the faith hall of fame — 6 Comments

  1. Thank you. This demonstrates that the Lord expects more of the Spiritual giants than those who just do a not-very-good best.

  2. ““Or suppose you make a foolish vow of any kind, whether its purpose is for good or for bad. When you realize its foolishness, you must admit your guilt. “When you become aware of your guilt in any of these ways, you must confess your sin. Then you must bring to the Lord as the penalty for your sin a female from the flock, either a sheep or a goat. This is a sin offering with which the priest will purify you from your sin, making you right with the Lord.”
    ‭‭Leviticus‬ ‭5‬:‭4‬-‭6‬ ‭NLT‬‬
If Jephthah would have known the Word of God, he would have realized that there was a way of escape, written in the law, to cancel a foolish vow. Instead, his daughter died in vain.

    • Yes indeed. Apparently, the priests didn’t know any better than he did. Lots of people today are in the same boat. Too much of the church has a lot of appreciation of stories, ritual, and tradition and little actual understanding of God’s word. It is, therefore, astounding grace that the Bible says the world is unworthy of Jephthah.
